The English word "society" emerged in the 15th century and is derived from the French société. The French word, in turn, had its origin in the Latin societas, a "friendly association with others," from socius
meaning "companion, associate, comrade or business partner." The Latin
word was derived from the Greek socus locus, and implied a social
contract between members of the community. Implicit in the meaning of
society is that its members share some mutual concern or interest, a
common objective or common characteristics.
We as members of the St. Clair Society for Historic Preservation, in fact, share a mutual concern and interest of historic preservation and ultimately it has become a common objective. Society members are passionate about its city's history, history in general, architecture, and the need to maintain a clean, well thought out community for future generations to come. Most of our members are historic homeowners and have spent countless hours and monies to preserve that certain aura known to St. Clair.
